- Sid was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969
- Won the Hart trophy 1949
- Second All Star team 1942 and 1951
- First All Star team 1949 and 1950
- Abel's # 12 jersey was retired and hung in the rafters between # 9 Gordie Howe
 and # 7 Ted Lindsay April 29 - 1995
- In Abel's career he wore #'s - 4 - 7 - 9 - 12 - 14 - 19 -  20
- In 1949/50 Lindsay , Abel & Howe finished 1 - 2 - 3 in the NHL scoring race.
 the only time in NHL history that 3 line mate's achieved that feat.

- In 1952 Abel was traded to Chicago and was named Coach of the team for the
 next 2 seasons. He was the last full time Player - Head Coach in NHL history.
 He only played 3 games in 1953/54
- Abel picked up the nickname "Boot Nose" after he taunted Maurice Richard
 and paid for his insult with a punch that broke his nose.
- Abel was color commentator on Red Wings Radio and TV in the 70's and 80's     


- Played for the Melville V-8's 1935/36 and a bit in 1936/37
